Alright, this one may be a bit surprising. Nelly Furtado. Yes, that girl who sings “Promiscuous.” I first heard of NF, when I picked up the Whoa Nelly! demo at some record store in SLC. I liked “Well Well,” pretty much right away. I admit that it was mostly for the way it sounded in the trunk, making the subs boom. At the time I was really into making the low end as loud as possible. That song has some bass notes that probably get down around the 15Hz frequency. It makes your teeth feel like they are shaking. Anyway, I wasn’t super keen on her vocal quality, at the time. I thought it was kind of pinched and almost, false. Come to think of it, she still sounds like that.
However, the demo did its job and I ended up purchasing Whoa Nelly!, the day that it was released. There were some other good songs on there (besides “Well Well”). I would say overall that it is a pretty good album, despite the heavily rotated (to the point of diminishing return) “Like a bird.” Then Loose came out. Let’s just say that Timbaland had his way with that album. Although fun at times in the club, overall, the album was too Timbalandified. I had pretty much given up on Nelly at that point. The fact that she is Canadian Portuguese and slipped in some Portuguese lyrics now and then (which is hot) wasn’t even doing it for me anymore.
Theeennnnnn… the other day, I heard some of her new stuff. It was on my way out the door, probably leaving for work. We were listening to music while getting ready. I was like, “hey, is this Nelly Furtado?” Reagan told me that it probably was, and that NF had released a new album that we hadn’t really even listened to, yet. I’m not really sure how it even made its way onto my Ipod. Ok, and upon fact checking, it isn’t even new. It was released before Loose. Apparently one of us downloaded it at some point.
The album is called Folklore. If you are a REAL NF fan, (which apparently I’m not), this is probably all old news. Anyway, I gave it a thorough listening to, over the past couple of days. The lyrics are a little cheesy (trying a little too hard to be deep). But overall, I feel like it is much more representative of Furtado, as an artist (not Timbaland), than Loose was. I really liked a couple of the songs on there. The one I’m posting is called “The Grass is Green.” One of the reasons that I like it is because the bass part is a lot like the bass lines that I write. They are built with simple octaves that kind of follow the melody. Speaking of bass lines that I write, I was recently K/Oed of the band that I was playing with (formerly known as Suede Silhoutte [pronounced with French accent]). I know, it totally sucks. It went kind of like this..
CV– “I’ve met someone. And, that someone plays bass.”
Jake– “Really?”
CV– “Yes. In fact, I’m moving in with him.”
Hahaha, it totally wasn’t like that at all. The reality is that CV really did get a new roommate who plays bass. But I had been slacking for a while. Spread too thin. You know how it gets. I tried to make it sound a lot more dramatic than it actually was.
Wow, someone got a bit sidetracked. Here is that song I was talking about. So, check it——–
