After a string of sharing hip-hop and techno, I figured it is time to get back to some rock. I have absolutely loved this band since the first moment that I ever heard them. That’s right, the Pixies. Kind of a weird band to absolutely love, I agree. Frank Black (a UMASS alum), affectionately known as Black Francis, is a total freak. He has kind of a pinched nasal voice, loves to break into falsetto and screaming. Don’t let that dissuade you from liking the Pixies, though. Because, they are totally raw, and they rock. Black’s vocals are often times backed by that of Kim Deal (who also plays bass). Interestingly enough, Kim and her identical twin sister, Kelly had a pre-existing side project, the Breeders. Remember them? “Cannonball?” Back to the subject of the Pixies, when I first started playing bass, I learned pretty much every song from the album “Doolittle.” That album remains one of my favorites, to date. They broke up the year before I graduated from High School, and Frank Black went Solo. They did gain a little bit of fame during the breakup period, when “Where is my mind” made it’s way into the end of the movie Fight Club. Around 2003, they must have been running low on cash, so they got back together. They have put out a single since then, but no new albums. They have also put out a documentary, which I am still needing to look into. My favorite Pixies song is probably “Here comes your man.” It is also, one of their tamer renditions. So, that’s the one I’m sharing. Checkiddout.
