I fired up the pedals this morning and rode to work. I loved it. I have to say, for not having done it before, I feel like it went off pretty smooth. I guess that we will see if I still feel that way when I get home tonight. Anyway, there are a few things that I still need to get worked out. For instance, I tried to place my shirt very carefully in my messenger bag, but it was still a total wrinkly mess when I arrived at work and took it out. I’m going to have to wear a cardigan all day to cover it up. I also want to get some sort of rack so that I don’t have to carry the bag slung over my shoulder for the full 13 miles. Not only is the bag annoying, it makes my back into a sweaty mess. I also think that I need to get a new seat, or maybe just toughen up. I’m not going to lie, my booty is a bit on the tender side. Aside from those issues, it was awesome. Especially since, heat/humidity-wise, it probably won’t get much worse than it is today. So, I feel like I know what to expect in the future. The nice thing about riding down the Hudson river path, is that there is a breeze coming off of the water, the whole way. So even though it is already 82 degrees with 85% relative humidity, you never feel like you are stuck in a sauna. I’m hoping that I can ride in again on Thursday. Tomorrow, I can’t because of Reagan’s high heel-a-thon, and (most likely) a subsequent trip to the ER, so they can set her broken ankle and put a cast on it. Tadd, thanks again for the new wheels.

P.S. the bike in the picture is not my bike. I’m pretty sure that I could never afford something so nice. Even if I could, I wouldn’t be cool enough to ride it. But, a man can dream.

Try getting a bottle of wrinkle out to keep in your office. You can spray it on your shirt, while it is hung up or something and pull and tug on it, and the wrinkles come out. I use it all the time for Aaron so I dont have to iron.
There have been a couple of times in my life when a bike was my primary mode of transportation- once when I was in college and without a car, and once when I lived in San Diego, and chose to ride instead of driving. I can tell you that there is always a sore period when you first start riding again, maybe there is a super-fat gel granny seat that might help, but any seat that a respectable guy like you would pick out will probably hurt until you build up a tolerance. As far as the bag goes- if you’re rockin’ the “messenger-style” bag, it gets easier to ride with one after a while- but I know how annoying it can be at first- give yourself a little time to settle in to the new ride before you start making other purchases- especially if you like the gear that you have now at all. I miss riding, I’m happy to hear you guys got some bikes, there’s nothing like riding a bike to make your commute an enjoyable experience.
