Last night on the way home, my driver was listening to AM 1010 WINS. I think that is like the only station that they are allowed to have on. Anyway, the guy on the radio was giving the news. He was talking about Deutsche Bank and how they are trying to decide whether or not to have offices downtown again. Their building is the one that was damaged in the Sept. 11 attacks so badly that they had to ultimately demolish it. Because of Asbestos, they are still in the process of demolishing it, floor by floor. So, the guy kept saying “ground zero.” Even when he was using future tense, about DB coming back downtown, he was like “…or will they have offices downtown again, near ground zero?” How long will Trade Center be branded with the moniker “ground zero?” Is there are certain location in Hiroshima or Nagasaki that was/is called ground zero? I mean it isn’t like Trade Center is still a big smoldering pile of rubble. Do you think that any of the people who take the PATH train from Jersey are like “yeah, I when I got out of the train at ground zero this morning…”? I guess maybe they do, but I kind of have to doubt it. Anyway, as can be seen, from the picture that I took this morning, Trade Center is totally coming along. The foundation for the Freedom Tower is already well under way. I’m not really sure what the point to this post is. I guess that it probably just a pet peevish rant. But I feel like when people say ground zero instead of Trade Center, it is just kind of depressing and anachronistic. Maybe when the project is finished and the visitor’s center opens, people will no longer feel the need memorialize the location with such a negative term. Maybe I’m just being a nerd.
What’s in a name?
