I am entertained by the way that pop culture has embraced the use of acronyms, initials and text message/instant message slang as part of normal conversation. After repeated exposure to it, it can start to seem normal (scary). Sometimes it takes a parody, like the ones on those old Cingular commercials (where the people are talking to each other exclusively in text lingo, straight “omg’s” and “ttfn’s”) to showcase just how ridiculous it is to speak that way. Anyway, I was reading an article about Three Mile Island, this morning on the train. For those not familiar with Three Mile Island, it is the nuclear power plant in Westchester PA, that melted down in ’79. This unfortunate incident set the standard for public fear of nuclear power/nuclear meltdowns. Anyway, the author kept abbreviating Three Mile Island, as “TMI.” I think that this is much better than the current generally accepted meaning of the initials TMI. From now on, when ever you hear me include “TMI” in conversation, I’m not saying “too much information.” I’m saying Three Mile Island.
